Christmas Superfans and Their Homes

Christmas means a lot of different things to a lot of different people – religion, family, charity, presents. For photographer Jesse Rieser, Christmas is a time to cast an almost anthropological eye over the “monuments to merriness” assembled by Americans in full holiday spirit.

Rieser began the project, titled Christmas in America: Happy Birthday Jesus four years ago after his parents – who are featured in some his images – relocated from St. Louis, Missouri, to Phoenix, Arizona.

Abandoned School in Detroit - Now and Then by detroiturbex

In a fascinating series entitled Cass Tech – Now and Then, detroiturbex has created a 43-picture gallery of old photos and found the exact location of where they were taken and made a composite of the past and present.

While the original Cass Tech was left abandoned for some time, a new Cass Technical High School was built in 2004 in an adjacent lot to the north of the original building. According to Wikipedia, the original building was demolished in July of 2011.

For more urban exploration of Detroit, be sure to visit detroiturbex.com. You can also find them on Facebook.

Cranberry Bogs

Every fall before the harvest, the berries of carefully irrigated cranberry shrubs ripen to a deep red. But in most areas where they’re grown, cranberries aren’t picked by hand. Farmers first flood the beds with water until the vines are submerged, then drive harvesters through these bogs to separate the berries from their stems. The picked fruit will finally rise to the surface of the water, creating the floating pools of pink and red that appear so vividly in these photos.
